When I first decided to dye my hair with permanent dye I had no clue what to buy. I just knew I wanted my hair dyed. I had heard about henna and tried it out. I was soooo disappointed. It took forever to rinse out and I didn’t see the hair color results I wanted. I’m not knocking henna. That was my first experience with it, and I had no clue what I was doing. So sometime after that maybe a couple of years, I went to a local Sally Beauty supply and I talked to a salesperson. Most of what she was saying went right over my head about hair dyes, but I did understand that if I wanted vibrant color on my natural tightly coiled African American hair I would have to bleach it. The term bleach scared me, so I asked her what else could I do and she pointed me to a Black hair texture dye line. I tried one box(duh) and it didn’t cover all over, and I had patches of dyed hair. So, recently I had heard that natural hair dyes exist. I was like wow where can I get that! Here’s a short list of what natural box colors that I know about from the internet, but I haven’t tried:
Regretfully, I can’t tell you personally experience on these permanent natural color dyes, but I’ll give you what information I can. Naturtint has a variety of colors from Natural chestnut to honey blonde, to black brown. They even have some men hair color boxes in this brand too. On a few of the reviews I’ve read on this one that it doesn’t fully cover white or grey hair, someone else says they leave on a bit longer. This one still has hydrogen peroxide in it.
Herbatint
Herbatint has a variety of colors like naturtint does. It still has hydrogen peroxide in it. I think I heard about this box not coming with color bottle or something so you may have to get a plastic color bottle. The reviews on this one are mostly good stating that their grey was covered without ammonia. Also, on this one you might want to go as light as you can if you want light hair, because some people said the colors were dark.
Light Mountain Natural Color The Gray!
I’m not sure what the ingredients are on this one, but it does say no harsh peroxide or ammonia. I believe this one is a henna coloring process. On this brand it seems as though people have a love hate relationship with the reviews. Someone even said it was too complicated. This is one of the most safe semi-permanent box colors though.
Surya Henna
Now this is one I would seriously consider, because I have tried other products made by this brand before plus there are some good reviews out there for this henna color cream. I’m not sure that this one has a lot of colors to chose from, but they have nice colors check out this link
Those are the handful I could find if you know of others please post them in the comment section. You can also color your hair with some everyday household edibles such as teas, lemons, coffee, beet juice, and carrot juice. If you want to go lighter you have to use chamomile tea and lemons. I’m not to sure on measurements as you would want to use more lemons and tea depending on length and how light you want it some people say the sit in the sun or play in the sun so they can go lighter after the lemon treatment, but I haven’t heard how long your suppose to be in the sun. Seems to me it just takes time if you want to go lighter. Beet juice and Carrot juice gives you red hair. With the coffee rinse for brown hair it seems more easy, but I don’t know how you like the smell of coffee. I am currently trying the coffee rinse right now as I type this. I just eyeballed some coffee I put in the end of a 32 oz cup and filled it with water and rinsed my hair with it three times. For the final coffee water I’m just going to keep it in my hair for 30 minutes and see what happens. Also, with these house hold rinses keep in mind that they are just rinses and won’t probably cover your grey. I have read that amla(Indian gooseberry) you can find shampoos and hair oils with amla that prevents premature grey. If you have anymore to add to my natural color list let me know in the comments. C ya!
Update: Well here’s my results. I really didn’t actually I notice a little color change, but maybe as time passes I will see more color and smell less like coffee. LOL
