If you suffer from diabetes then you almost certainly already know a lot about it. It’s a very common medical condition. You have probably been told that you need to test your blood and inject yourself with insulin to manage the condition. It’s also important to manage your diet so that you can control your blood sugar levels.
Type 1 Diabetes is where the patient doesn’t produce any insulin which means that they can’t break the sugar down. They need to inject themselves with insulin every day so that they can live normal lives. Without this injection their lives would be at risk.
Type 2 Diabetes is slightly different; this is where insulin is produced however their body can’t use it properly. Both of these conditions are autoimmune diseases because it’s the body that is attacking itself.
When you are first diagnosed with diabetes it can be very scary and confusing. There are so many things that you need to understand in order to manage your condition effectively.
If you think you might have diabetes then you may notice some of the following symptoms:
Thirsty
If you always feel thirsty even if you drink lots of water then this could be a sign of diabetes. This is a common symptom because when someone suffers from diabetes their body will take water out of the blood. This means that you have to drink lots of water to replace this missing water. If you always feel thirsty then make sure that you see your doctor as soon as possible.
Going to the toilet
You might always need to spend time on the toilet because you are drinking so much but you still feel thirsty. If you have too much glucose in your bloodstream then this will cause you to urinate much more often.
Fatigue
If you feel tired and weak then you might want to visit your doctor. Sugar provides energy however without insulin your body is not able to use this source of energy. This will mean that the sugar stays in the blood and will cause problems.
Tingling
Many diabetics experience tingling in their extremities like their toes and fingers. Some people suffering from diabetes will also get the condition diagnosed when they visit their optician. The eyes can be used to spot many medical problems including diabetes.
What to eat?
If you suffer from type 2 diabetes then you might want to know what you can eat. Fortunately you can still have great fun even though you suffer from diabetes.
You need to avoid consuming excess sugar because a person suffering from type 2 diabetes is not able to deal with the sugar. If the sugar remains in the bloodstream then it can cause all sorts of problems for our bodies. Make sure that you avoid eating sugary or products which are sweetened.
You also need to avoid drinking fruit juice or fizzy drinks because these are high in sugar. These will cause the same problems as eating foods that are high in sugar.
You can still eat healthy foods like fresh vegetables and fish. You can eat any type of meet and you need to make sure that you drink plenty of water. Poultry can also be eaten and there are plenty of foods that you can still enjoy. Seafood can be eaten which tastes delicious! A diabetic diet doesn’t have to be boring.
Diabetes is a serious medical condition but it’s very easy to manage. It just takes plenty of practice so that you can get your head around it and decide what you can eat.
