Puppies are like members of the family and it’s important that you treat them right so that the whole family can appreciate them. When you bring a new puppy into your home it’s just like getting a new baby.

One of the first things that you will have to teach your puppy is that they can’t go to the toilet wherever they like. Housetraining your puppy can be very difficult. There are a number of things that you should do to make this process more successful.

You must realize that puppies are a responsibility and that you need to look after them. A puppy might be really cute but looking after one will be a lot of hard work. Not only will you have to care for him but you will also have to teach him what to do.

Training a puppy is not an easy task; in order to succeed you must be patient and devoted. It’s a similar process to when you are potty training your son or daughter. Younger puppies will be much harder to train because they will have less control over their bladder.

It’s important to make sure that your puppy is trained because otherwise they will make a mess around your house. One of the worst things that your dog can do is go to the toilet inside your house. This would make your home smell horrible which would not be nice for you or the rest of your family. This means that your dog needs to learn when to go to the toilet as early as possible. It’s not actually that difficult to do if you know some simple tips.

Space

Everyone needs their own private space, and your puppy is no different. You should use a crate, kennel or cage to become his private space. This will make the puppy feel at home. It’s important though never to treat the cage like a form of punishment because this will mean that your puppy doesn’t like his cage.

The crate needs to be somewhere that your dog feels safe and secure. The puppy needs to be able to come and go from his crate as he wants.

Body Language

You should study your puppy and learn about his body language. You will start to notice that some of the things he does are clues that he is going to do something else. You should be able to use this information to find out when your puppy needs to go to the toilet.

When you take your puppy outside you must give him plenty of praise. Make sure that you praise him in a soft voice and be careful not to shout.

Routine

The easiest way of toilet training a puppy is to get them into a routine. You need to take them outside as soon as they wake up in the morning, after eating, and before sleeping.

Your puppy should soon get the idea that they need to go to the toilet when they go outside. Puppies generally don’t like going to the toilet where they live anyway, so it’s just a matter of showing them what to do. By taking them outside they will soon understand exactly what they need to do and when they need to do it.

Just treat your puppy like a child and you will have no problem toilet training him. Make sure that you reinforce positive behavior rather than punishing bad behavior. Shouting at your dog when he has an accident won’t be any use because it will make the problem worse. Instead you need to praise him when he does something right.
